At its meeting of 30 April 2021, Council considered three permit applications. Following their deliberations, members determined not to oppose any of the applications.
lMembers also highlighted the need for consultants to develop better relationships with the Aboriginal community. This would ensure feedback is received from all relevant groups and individuals on proposed developments that may impact Aboriginal cultural heritage.
As a standing item on their Agenda, Council were provided with an update on the Review of the Aboriginal Heritage Act 1975. Once a Government has been formed following the 1 May election, progress will resume for the tabling of the Review in Parliament and the Government's Response. Council acknowledged that legislative reform will be a lengthy process however, it is needed to protect Aboriginal cultural heritage in Tasmania.
Council received a presentation from Aboriginal Heritage Tasmania staff on the At-Risk sites in the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. Members gained a better understanding of the methods and model used to undertake this work.
The next meeting of the Aboriginal Heritage Council will be held on 27 May 2021 over two days at Scamander, to include site visits to Aboriginal cultural heritage sites in the region.
